Activity 9 - Select Geometry

Workshop Resources

There are two types of geometry here, one contains square and one contains fillet. Why is it so important? There’s a phenomenon called stress concentrations, areas on an object where forces are far greater than the other parts of the object. Sharp edges on objects have higher stress concentrations when forces are distributed on them, compared to rounded edges. A famous example is why airplanes use rounded windows versus rectangular windows. The red lines below represent forces across the objects, notice how much more dense the red lines are around the rectangular corners compared to the rounded corners.

Having high stress concentrations can make certain values of force dangerous to the part, that can easily cause it to fail. Consider the information when choosing a type of corner for your shaft design. You have now concluded the code and you should be given a diameter size!
